The uncontrollables

I had been planning my Non-profit’s June 9th walk, 2023 since January 2nd of 2023. I picked a date, a park, told friends, family, marketed this walk EVERYWHERE our non-profit could afford to advertise. The band was set, food truck booked and all was in place. I was so excited to start seeing people signing up to support our event and cause. I just knew I had done everything in my wheelhouse to have a successful event.

4 days before the event, our original food truck booked sent a text explaining he had to found a replacement because of a schedule conflict. The second food truck hadn’t responded to any emails. I had zero clue if a food truck was actually coming. This was a huge deal because our event was an after work event. Many people wanted to make sure they had dinner for their families.

The morning of this event , I was so happy to see we were looking at 77degrees and sunshine for our walk. Our walk was from 6p-8p with registration starting at 5pm. A huge load of set up equipment was loaded unto my neighbors truck and at 3pm, we all head to the park. By the time we arrived at our destination, approximately 307pm, I saw huge storm clouds rolling over the mountains. I hurry and check my phone for the weather. I see the forecast is now severe thunderstorms until 530pm. NOOOOOOOOOOOO 💔

Vendors dropped out, participants didn’t show and my dreams of having the perfect walk dissipated. Everything was wet, the band had to hunker down under the shelter so their equipment didn’t get wet, and the vendors who decided to come had to wait in their vehicles to set up until any signs of the storm passed. Safety 1st!

What happened was MAGICAL. The food truck did shoe up and his food was FANTASTIC!

The people did begin showing up after the storm! Not as many people if we didn’t have bad weather, but a great amount!

The band was so amazing and fantastic. We were set up safely by 615pm. The Band played from 6p-8p instead of 530-730p.

I can not control the uncontrollable factors, but I was reminded that all things happen as they should and to go with the flow. We as humans have to learn to define success differently and be willing to evolve the definition of success.
